KILL FORTY YAQUIS

Mexican Forces Punish Indians for Murder of Americans

LA COLORADO, Mexico, Feb 22. — The Mexican forces under Gen. Torres, numbering 400, have killed forty Yaquis and taken 167 prisoners in a two days' battle with the savages in the mountains east of this camp.

When the fight ended Gen. Luis Torres, with his staff, two-thirds of his force and prisoners, retuMazatlan Mountains, Mexicorned to La Colorado. The Mexican officers refused to make any statement of their own losses until they made their official report, but private soldiers of the force say they were inconsiderable. It is said there were 300 warriors in the Mazatlan Mountains.

About 100 of these broke through the Mexican lines and escaped, but the main force was hurled at a detachment commanded by Capt. Luis Barron, an old Yaqui fighter who was guarding one of the mountain passes. He succeeded in holding the savages in check until the arrival of reinforcements when they were driven back with heavy losses and finally surrendered.

The expedition from which Gen. Torres and his force just returned was brought about by the murder of four Americans near La Colorado some weeks ago.
